[...] Running DosBox to play Ultima 7 might work (though it would be woefully slow), but Exult (which has been ported to the PSP) would be better. Here’s the catch though: both Exult and DosBox rely on original files. [...]

[...] As I reported a few months ago, the Ultima VII engine emulator Exult was ported to the Sony PSP by The Food Sucks team. Not only was it fantastic to see the classic RPG/adventure game ported to a handheld gaming platform, but the quality of the homebrewed port itself was stunning in every respect. (If you aren’t familiar with Exult but you own a Sony PSP, I highly recommend heading on over to the development team’s page and give it a shot.) [...]

That's a good question. That depends upon the memory requirements that Pentagram has, and if the PSP has enough processing power to handle it.

Maybe I should give these games another chance one of these days. I'll add it to my list of "game to play in this life-time" ^_^.

I have a copy of Ultima VI for the SNES around here somewhere - unfortunately the game was (again) tinkered with to fit on the cartridge, and the plot was subsequently broken. The PC/C64/Amiga versions are much, much better. Of course, free-form exploration has always been a central theme in the Ultima series, but the console ports consistently broke the plots/quests that left 'breadcrumb trails' for players that simplified exploration a bit.

Ultima VIII: Pagan is a special game, I think, and deserves its own kind of analysis. It's probably the most infamous Ultima, for several reasons. I didn't finish the game either when I bought it. In fact I don't believe that I've ever finished that game.

My first introduction to Ultima was actually part VI on the SNES. Not sure that I really enjoyed it that much though, mostly because I too was rather confused. I didn't really know where to go, and what to do, as it seemed like you could really go anywhere. These days I like that in a game, but back then it didn't help ;).

After that, I got part VIII on the PC, and enjoyed that a fair amount. Don't think I ever finished it though. I think I may not have been quite old enough to appreciate them at the time.
